The intermingling of art and technology has grown increasingly prevalent, bringing forth a powerful new wave of “art tech.” Mixed media works and interactive art exhibitions are becoming the new normal as museums, galleries, and auction houses seek status as cutting-edge culture authorities on a global scale. In this article, Doron Fagelson will explore five unusual art exhibitions illustrating the exceptional utilization of technology to create innovative, engaging, and immersive art experiences.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic carried many challenges in almost all areas, a silver lining may be drawn from the many ensuing innovations that clearly illustrate the art world’s resilience and creativity in the face of adversity. As I described in this article, the need to rethink standard business models in a socially distanced world has given a new lease of life to many institutions throughout the art market. The rapid rise of digital art and the expansion of interactive and immersive exhibitions have brought technology to the center of the latest masterpieces coming to the forefront of commercial visual art.

From the Liangzhu-based Chinese museum offering its visitors augmented reality glasses to digital artist Beeple selling his work for $69 million, technology’s immersion in the modern art space has transformed the experience for both creators and viewers.

The following descriptions focus on five unusual exhibitions illustrating the exceptional utilization of technology to create innovative, engaging, and immersive art experiences.

1. Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience, Worldwide

Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience is a traveling exhibit hosted in cities ranging from London and Tel Aviv to Boston and Dallas, with over 5 million visitors to date.

Art enthusiasts are treated to a tour of Van Gogh’s life through cutting-edge, 360-degree digital projections of his works. The highly immersive exhibition features 60 projections across a surface of more than 1,000 square meters to transport viewers to the core of his legendary works. The projections animate Van Gogh’s pieces to move along the walls and floors of the exhibit, bringing his masterful artwork to life. Simultaneously, a 35-minute sound and light show plays on a loop to complete the immersive experience. The exhibit also utilizes separate rooms with distinct technological features designed to highlight some of Van Gogh’s most popular pieces.

In one space, visitors can interact with a digital art study of Van Gogh’s flower paintings. Another room takes viewers to the setting of Van Gogh’s The Bedroom, providing informative panels along the way. The Colour & Post space allows visitors to create their own pieces after being inspired by everything they have witnessed. At the end of the exhibition, viewers can tour Van Gogh’s life through an immersive, 11-minute VR experience to feel what it would be like to walk a day in his shoes.

2. Illusionaries, London

Illusionaries is a captivating art exposition that takes visitors on a 40-minute transformative journey across three galleries. Through mind-bending installations, it challenges perceptions and provokes deep thought. The exhibition cleverly employs cutting-edge technology to create a multisensory adventure, engaging sight, sound, and touch.

One of the installations, titled Epilogue, serves as an intriguing introduction to the exhibition’s titular character. Visitors are immersed in a 360-degree projection that showcases mesmerizing 2D animations. Themes of greed, jealousy, fear, and competition are skillfully woven into the visuals, captivating viewers and setting the stage for the immersive experience to come.

With Before the Meaning Comes, visitors encounter a series of infinity mirrors that serve as windows into the protagonist’s journey of rebirth. Exploring the concepts of memory, connection, and relationships, these mirrors create an enchanting visual spectacle, captivating visitors as they reflect upon their own experiences.

Lastly, Primordial Gardeners offers an intimate escape room experience. It combines soothing acoustics, gentle mist, and captivating visual projections to create a serene and calming atmosphere. Visitors are invited to engage their senses, immersing themselves in the enchanting world of the exhibition.

3. Refik Anadol’s installation, MoMA

Refik Anadol: Unsupervised at MoMA is an innovative exploration of artificial intelligence and data visualization. It is an immersive experience that showcases machine learning algorithms’ creative potential. Through a combination of large-scale projections, mesmerizing visuals, and dynamic audio, Anadol’s installation translates vast amounts of data into stunning artistic representations.

The installation mediates the intersection of technology and artistic expression, as the AI model reimagines the history of modern art and envisions its future possibilities. The environment of MoMA’s Gund Lobby influences the shifting imagery and sound, responding to changes in light, movement, acoustics, and even the weather.

Unsupervised challenges traditional approaches to AI by delving into fantasy, hallucination, and irrationality, creating an alternative understanding of art-making. The artworks are encoded on the blockchain, highlighting the fusion of technology and art in Anadol’s visionary creation, which aims to make the invisible visible and forge connections between memories and the future.

4. Hylozoism, Hong Kong

Hylozoism combines an eclectic range of multimedia installations, interactive artworks, and immersive experiences.
